Things to remember to deliver the good session
* What learners are expecting?
1. ability to work with data:
2. apply knowledge learn: how to use learnt knowledge in solving the real-world problem.
when to use, when not to use, where to use and solve real-world problems.
3. interpret output: should be able to interpret the output and should be able to tell the story of the data and output and insides.
4. ability to solve the problem: for given problems by using data at hand. how do you approach the problem?
* How to deliver the session?
1. Explain the agenda. understand the learners and things to focus on. (10 mins)
2. Clarify doubts and prioritize the topic based on the majority of learners. (20 mins)
3. hands-on. if time taking then prepare the output in the advance. (60 mins)
4. Extended doubt clearing: make it interactive, you only ask questions and take answers from learners based on use cases. (25 mins)
5. ask learners to summarize and you fill in the gaps (5 mins)
* best practices for delivering a good session:
1. Prepare well (keep all the materials handy). searching during the session is not a good practice. you should know the background of all learners, who have a coding background and who doesn't.
2. Follow the session plan. make sure you cover all the important topics. delivering content within a time frame is an art. that require time judgement.
3. in case of doubts always go on hands-on. don't go through the case studies mechanically.
example. this is a dataset, this is the model and this is our loss function and accuracy. rather go like this " this is business, marketing manager wants to deliver better response rate to campaigns and therefore he approaches data scientists to build the model to predict the likelihood of purchase. after getting accuracy or loss, you should not end up there. you should connect back to business again saying because this business could save money or what business benefitted.
4. ask questions and make them think and answer. if a learner asked you the question and you feel that you have already covered that topic so instead of covering that topic again, ask the learner a question based on his understanding and take that answer from him only.
5. wherever possible tell stories.
6. If possible share your notes or reference materials you used to prepare for the session.
* Managing Queries:
After delivering a good session many queries come. It is the good problem to solve.
1. you can ignore if these are not in scope queries like the speed of a site, regarding fees.
2. 10% of mentees will be not good at picking the new topic so their questions will be very basic then top 10% who are ahead of the topic their questions are advanced and the middle 80% will be average. so while responding you have to think about what is beneficial to the group (80%)
3. mentor sessions are only for learning purposes.
* Things to take care of:
1. How good a mentor is the secondary but the most important thing is the Trust of a mentor.
so never ignore the queries whether you know about this topic or not. if don't know or don't want to answer then simply say I will get back to you on this one.
2. Refraining from saying things that will reduce the confidence of mentees from mentors. like I don't know this technique, I am not proficient in this language, refer google for this.
3. Don't commit anything to program design or extra sessions. always ask program office support.
4. Don't open youtube videos and google during the session. you can share the external links but keep the program office in the loop.
* Ratings:
Ratings are based on the following parameters.
1. Concepts covered and explanation.
2. Examples and case studies.
3. Pace of delivery.
4. Doubts clearing and interaction.
For more than 2 weeks if the ratings are less than 4 then the mentor for that group is changed.
